Choose your Trail Class:

Trail Classes are established by the National Park Service as general categories reflecting trail development scale, representing its intended design and management standards.

1

Class 1: Minimal/Undeveloped Trail

Single track, lightly discernible. Use of predominantly native materials. Obstacles are common, naturally occurring, and intended to provide increased challenge. Brush, steep grades, rocks and logs may be present.
2

Class 2: Simple/Minor Development Trail

Single track, continuous and discernible, but still narrow and can be rough. Use of predominantly native materials. Obstacles may be common, but blockages are cleared to define route and protect resources. Vegetation may encroach into the trailway.
3

Class 3: Developed/Improved Trail

Single track, continuous and obvious, with allowances constructed for passing. Use of native or imported materials. Obstacles may be common, but not substantial or intended to provide challenge. Vegetation is cleared outside of trailway.
4

Class 4: Highly Developed Trail

Wide track and relatively smooth, with few irregularities. Use of native or imported materials.
Trail surface is commonly hardened dirt. Obstacles are infrequent. Vegetation is cleared outside of trailway.
5

Class 5: Fully Developed Trail

Wide track, firm, stable, and generally uniform. Use of native or imported materials.
Trail surface is commonly hardened with imported material. Obstacles are not present. Grades are typically < 8%.

Choose your Process:

All three of our trailbuilding processes ensure that native plants, wildlife and other natural resources are protected, and that your finished trail results in a safe and enjoyable experience in the wilderness.

Zero Impact

This trailbuilding process uses all non-motorized and quiet handtools, such as a Pulaski, Mcleod, handsaw, shovel, rake, and loppers. This process preserves the local animal habitats, as well as your good terms with close neighbors.

Low Impact

We add to the above list the following tools as required: chainsaw, rototiller, chipper/shredder, dirt tamper. This process still keeps a minimum environmental impact, and low dirt/silt disturbance, but does create some noise.

Medium Impact

For larger trail systems, we may require the use of heavy equipment suck as a skid steer (Bobcat), a mini-excavator, or dump truck. Larger amounts of dirt moving may require a permit, especially on waterfront sites.

The Trailbuilders

Aidan Latham

Aidan was summiting Mt. Hood by the time he was 16, and has conquered many other 12k+ peaks, downhill bike courses and a marathon. A Certified Trailbuilder, Aidan has developed trail and features for downhill biking at area mountain bike parks for use in competition. Aidan has a solid familiarity with the outdoor industry through his work at REI, and also has horticultural landscape experience. 1 part entrepreneur, 3 parts trailbuilder, 2 parts downhill racer and 1 part big brother. Is that too many parts?

Marcus Latham

An avid downhill biker, Marcus specializes in creating downhill biking trails, and occasionally a few wooden ramps. He lends his workhorse abilities to the crew, and with miles of trailblazing under his belt, Marcus is the first line through on new trail installation. Marcus is speaking in the 3rd person, hoping you won’t notice he’s writing this himself.

Ben Latham

A future multi-million dollar venture capitalist, but for the time being a trailbuilder and photographer, Ben is an aggressive pump track and dirt jump builder, always has new ideas and helps the crew make them happen. He usually acts as a bike trials rider, but downhill and mountain biking are also part of his field of interest. Helping the crew with new trail is just one of his many hidden talents.
